The exhibition reopens the gallery’s historic home by presenting artworks that have shaped Universiti Malaya’s visual identity across generations. It reflects the university’s long-standing role in cultivating artistic knowledge, critical inquiry, and cultural stewardship.
The curatorial approach highlights the collection’s layered histories — UMAG's academic beginnings, its ties to regional artistic developments, and its evolution through gifts, acquisitions, and residencies. A segment of tribute to the Former Chancellor of UM, Al-Marhum Sultan Azlan Shah al-Maghfur-Lah, succinctly conveys the significance of royal blessing within UM's history as a legacy that must always be preserved and related. It also highlights the nation’s history and culture which allude to the importance of artwork as physical evidence in historiography.
By bringing together Malaysian and international works across different eras, Memorabilia positions UMAG as a living archive: one that embraces modernism, honors the local aesthetic revival, acknowledges the contributions of UM’s resident artists, and opens pathways for contemporary experimentation.
